U.S.-built bridge is windfall — for illegal Afghan drug trade

In AMERICA, ASIA, DRUGS on 28/06/2009 at 7:57 AM

In August 2007, the presidents of Afghanistan and Tajikistan walked side by side with the U.S. commerce secretary across a new $37 million concrete bridge that the Army Corps of Engineers designed to link two of Central Asia’s poorest countries. Dressed in a gray suit with an American flag pin in his lapel, then-Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said the modest two-lane span that U.S. taxpayers paid for would be “a critical transit route for trade and commerce” between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. Today, the bridge across the muddy waters of the Panj River is carrying much more than vegetables and timber… McClatchy

NASA moon bombing violates space law & may cause conflict with lunar ET/UFO civilizations

In AMERICA, NASA, WEAPONS on 19/06/2009 at 8:34 AM

The planned October 9, 2009 bombing of the moon by a NASA orbiter that will bomb the moon with a 2-ton kinetic weapon to create a 5 mile wide deep crater as an alleged water-seeking and lunar colonization experiment, is contrary to space law prohibiting environmental modification of celestial bodies.  The NASA moon bombing, a component of the LCROSS mission, may also trigger conflict with known extraterrestrial civilizations on the moon as reported on the moon in witnessed statements by U.S. astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, and in witnessed statements to NSA (National Security Agency) photos and documents regarding an extraterrestrial base on the dark side of the moon… Examiner

Lawmakers Call For An End To Federal Marijuana Prosecutions

In AMERICA, DEMOCRATS, DRUGS, POLITICAL PARTIES, REPUBLICANS on 18/06/2009 at 3:46 PM

Massachusetts Democrat Barney Frank, along with co-sponsors Ron Paul (R-TX); Maurice Hinchey (D-NY); Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA); and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), will reintroduce legislation today to limit the federal government’s authority to arrest and prosecute minor marijuana offenders. The measure, entitled an “Act to Remove Federal Penalties for Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults,” would eliminate federal penalties for the personal possession of up to 100 grams (over three and one-half ounces) of cannabis and for the not-for-profit transfer of up to one ounce of pot – making the prosecutions of these offenses strictly a state matter… Norml Blog

Internet most popular information source: poll

In AMERICA, COMPUTER / INTERNET / WEB on 17/06/2009 at 2:25 PM

The Internet is by far the most popular source of information and the preferred choice for news ahead of television, newspapers and radio, according to a new poll in the United States. But just a small fraction of U.S. adults considered social websites such as Facebook and MySpace as a good source of news and even fewer would opt for Twitter. More than half of the people questioned in the Zogby Interactive survey said they would select the Internet if they had to choose only one source of news, followed by 21 percent for television and 10 percent for both newspapers and radio. Only 10 percent described social websites as an important for news, and despite the media buzz about Twitter, only 4 percent would go to it for information… Reuters

McChrystal’s Kabul. Like Baghdad, a magnet for psychopathic killers and spies

In AMERICA, ASIA, OBAMA on 14/06/2009 at 2:32 PM

In assuming command of NATO forces in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal will have immense control over a Western military and contractor presence in the country that has turned the Afghan capital of Kabul into a “Baghdad East,” a place where psychopathic assassins, Chinese prostitute spies, and opium smugglers run rampant. And in a departure from past strategy in the war-torn country, the Obama administration is launching an “information war” in Afghanistan that will paint the Afghan government of Hamid Karzai as a beacon of democracy and stamp out any news or other information that could be seen as harmful to the U.S. war effort against Afghan insurgents who are opposed to the foreign military presence in their country… Wayne Madsen Report

Mikhail Gorbachev: It’s time for a second American revolution in the spirit of perestroika

In AMERICA, GORBACHEV on 10/06/2009 at 3:30 PM

Years ago, as the Cold War was coming to an end, I said to my fellow leaders around the globe: the world is on the cusp of great events, and in the face of new challenges all of us will have to change, you as well as we. For the most part, the reaction was polite but sceptical silence. In recent years, I have often told listeners that I feel Americans need their own change – a perestroika, not like the one in my country, but an American perestroika – and the reaction has been markedly different. Halls filled with thousands of people have responded with applause. Some have reacted with understanding. Others have objected… Sydney Morning Herald

US government securities seized from Japanese nationals, not clear whether real or fake

In AMERICA, ITALY, JAPAN on 08/06/2009 at 2:42 PM

Italian authorities have not yet determined whether they are real or fake, but if they are real the attempt to take them into Switzerland would be the largest financial smuggling operation in history; if they are fake, the matter would be even more mind-boggling because the quality of the counterfeit work is such that the fake bonds are undistinguishable from the real ones. Italy’s financial police (Guardia italiana di Finanza) has seized US bonds worth US 134.5 billion from two Japanese nationals at Chiasso (40 km from Milan) on the border between Italy and Switzerland. They include 249 US Federal Reserve bonds worth US$ 500 million each, plus ten Kennedy bonds and other US government securities worth a billion dollar each… Asia News

Planning for the worst: Gun-owners are on the defensive

In AMERICA, WEAPONS on 04/06/2009 at 3:41 PM

At the National Rifle Association’s 138th annual convention, held this year in Phoenix, Arizona, 47,000 people poured through the doors. They admired the fancy firearms, snacked on grilled buffalo and were happily recruited by shooting associations. Tom Power, of the Texas Gun Collectors Association, says membership has been soaring since Barack Obama took office. Bill Bachenberg, the owner of a shooting range near Allentown, Pennsylvania, has been registering 400 new members a month. “American gun-owners don’t trust this administration,” he says. American gun sales surged after Mr Obama was elected president. He had a voting record of raising the tax on guns and ammunition by 500%, and, on top of that… The Economist

Western economies poised to account for less than 50pc of world GDP

In AMERICA, ECONOMY, EUROPE on 02/06/2009 at 5:47 PM

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) is forecasting that because of the downturn and China’s economic resilience, the combined contribution from the US, Canada and Europe to world GDP will be 49.4pc in 2009, down from 52pc in 2008. CEBR said prior to the financial crisis Western world GDP was not expected to fall below 50pc until 2015. The West’s contribution to global GDP has been steadily falling since 2004, when it was about 60pc, but the recession has accelerated that process, CEBR said… Daily Telegraph

Dollar stops being Russia’s basic reserve currency

In AMERICA, ECONOMY, RUSSIA on 19/05/2009 at 6:29 AM

The US dollar is not Russia’s basic reserve currency anymore. The euro-based share of reserve assets of Russia’s Central Bank increased to the level of 47.5 percent as of January 1, 2009 and exceeded the investments in dollar assets, which made up 41.5 percent, The Vedomosti newspaper wrote. The dollar has thus lost the status of the basic reserve currency for the Russian Central Bank, the annual report, which the bank provided to the State Duma, said. In accordance with the report, about 47.5 percent of the currency assets of the Russian Central Bank were based on the euro, whereas the dollar-based assets made up 41.5 percent as of the beginning of the current year… Pravda
